Abstrakt     Critical care of a polytrauma patient at the time of his admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) requires a high professional knowledge, good organisational skills and ethics, and is therefore always a great challenge for health care (HC) staff. Such a patient is in critical, life-endangering condition; therefore an immediate and constant control of all vital functions has to be provided, as well as targeted diagnostics, specific treatment and an early rehabilitation. All the above requires a multidisciplinary approach. A great deal of care and responsibility for the patients lies on the nurse; therefore it is of vital importance that her/his qualities include a high level of professional knowledge, expert skills and the ability to make the right decisions. Proper health care is performed according to the plan prepared by the head nurse (the head of the nursing team), following the patient's medical diagnosis, and is based on teamwork. Teamwork is necessary, as several activities are often performed simultaneously.
