Abstrakt     Whooping cough is an acute bacterial disease involving the respiratory tract. The definition of whooping cough, based on clinical picture, is: cough, lasting minimally two weeks and (at least one charasteristic): o cough in paroxysms; o paroxysms have many coughs without intervening inhalation and are followed by a charasteristic crowing or high pitched inspiratory whoop; o paroxysm of cough is often followed by vomiting; there is no other reason for cough. The article describes epidemiological situation on whooping cough in Ljubljana region and outbreak of whooping cough in avgust 2004 as well. Children in teh latter outbreak of whooping cough were previously primary immunized. Less than a year passed since the last immunization. The question is, whether the illness was caused by genetically changed bacteria, which rendered vaccine inefficient.
