Abstrakt     RSV is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infections in children younger than one year. From 0.5 to 3.2% of children with RSV infection require hospitalization. High - risk conditions for severe RSV infection include prematurity (<32 weeks of gestation), chronic lung disease, congenital heart defects, immune deficiencies and age < 6 weeks. Most of these children clinically have bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Human metapneumovirus is newly discovered virus, which causes respiratory tract infections, very simmilar to infection caused by RSY Both viruses can also cause infection in adults, which mostly have signs of common cold. People > 65 years old, patients with heart and lung diseses and with immunodeficiency have more severe hMPV disease. Therapy for RSV and hMPY disease is mostly simptomatic. In preventing infections the most important measure is good hand hygiene, because RSY is mainly transmited by hands contaminated with infected respiratory secretes. Effeective measure in preventing infections with RSV in children with high-risk conditions is passive immunization with anti RSV monoclonal antibodies and a respitratory syncytial virus hyperimmune gammaglobulin.
