Abstrakt		Library websites are evolving into information gateways, giving access to library resources and services. Usability of web interface is crucial for the adoption of library gateway and requires constant development and improvement. The information collected by usability testing provides better understanding of how users interact with the portal during their search for information. The paper describes ihe main methods for testing ihe usability, found in the literature. These methods can be divided into four broad categories: objective performance, subjective performance, experimental evaluation and direct observation. The most prominent method from the last group is the protocol analysis or "think aloud" method, which enables the observer to investigate users' assumptions, inferences, misconceptions and problems. A great advantage of this method is that it gives important results even when applied on small groups of users, representative of the target population. For these reasons, the protocol analysis was chosen for testing the usability of the CMK portal. This usability study identified problems related to ambiguous terminology, presentation of information, navigational cues and interaction between the user and the portal. The results of the usability testing will be used in future development of the portal to better meet the information needs of CMK users.
