Abstrakt     Pub Med contains more than 35,000 different publications, which mention p53 in the title or abstract. More than 1000 articles were published only in the first six months of 2005. P53 is probably the most researched molecule in relation to cancer diagnostics and anticancer drugs. There exist at least two massive databases with data of P53 mutations in tumours (www.iarc.fr/p53 and http://p53.free.fr/). Because of the nature and extensiveness of protein p53 activity, experimental work from the last 20 years has demonstrated the crucial role of wild type p53 in tumour suppression. Despite massive work, we still cannot transfer information into diagnostic or treatment strategies. Problems with using p53 as a diagnostic and therapy marker are in the extent of pathways controlled by p53, the complexity of cancer itself and the range of effect in a cell during p53 deregulation.
