Abstrakt     Rerinal surgery consist of vitreoretinal surgery and classical retinal detachment surgery wit silicon shonge. Vitreoretinal surgery is the second most frequent surgery after cataract extraction. It is indicated in the treatment of various vitreous and retinal disorders such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, proliferative vitroretinopathy endophthalmitis, penetrating and perforating injuries of the eye. Almosr 500 vitreoretinal operations and 110 classical retinal detachment surgeries with silicon sponge were done in Eye Hospital in Ljubljana last year, witch is three times more like years ago. During vitrectomy vitreous opacities are cut away, pathological structuaral changes above and beneath the retina can be removed. Depending on the type of retinal disease different types of vitreous cavity tamponade such as silicone oil, gas or intraocular saline are used. Improved knowledge of the parthohistology of abnormal vitreoretinal structural changes and new surgical techniques have resulted in improved anatomical and visual results of vitreoretinal surgery, The list of indications has expanded. Minimal invasive surgery and the use of pharmacological agents are more and more important in retinal surgery.
