Abstrakt     Data on abundance and density of selected species are crucial for ecological and conservational studies. In the paper, the possibility for large-scale study of beetle populations using pitfall traps is presented in the case of four Dor Beetle species (Geotrupidae: Anoplotrupes stercorosus, Trypocopris vernalis, T. alpinus, Zuninoeus hoppei) in Slovenia. The effect of the season of beetle sampling on the estimation of relative activity abundances (RAA) is evaluated. The sampling was conducted in all five zoogeographical regions in Slovenia between May and September using 10 pitfall traps set in a line at each location. In the traps 4% wine vinegar was used as an attractant and fixative. The most abundant and distributed species in Slovenia was Anoplotrupes stercorosus (RAA = 0.03 - 13.9 individuals per 10 trap nights). Trypocopris alpinus had the most restricted distribution range. The species Trypocopris vernalis and Zuninoeus hoppei performed the highest RAA in a submediterranean zoogeographical region, while they were rare in inland part of Slovenia. The seasonal population dynamics influenced significantly the size of RAA in different months, although the relative comparisons of abundances between survey locations in different months were constant. On the contrary, the betweenyear population fluctuations were low in the Dor Beetles and did not have significant effect on RAA if the habitat and vegetation structure of the environment was stable. Therefore, the authors suggest that it would be necessary to evaluate indicative characteristics of the Dor Beetles for the environmental changes effects in further studies.
Izvleček     Poznavanje številčnosti in gostot osebkov izbranih vrst je ključno za ekološke in varstvene študije. Na primeru štirih vrst govnačev (Geotrupidae: Auoplotrupes stercorosus, Trypocopris vernalis, T. alpinus, Zuninoeus hoppei) je v članku prikazana možnost študija populacij hroščev na širšem območju z uporabo zemeljskih pasti in ovrednoten vpliv časa vzorčenja na ocene tako dobljenih relativnih aktivnih abundanc (RAA). Hrošči so bili vzorčeni z linijo 10 zemeljskih pasti (vinski kis kot vaba in fiksativ) med majem in septembrom na lokacijah v vseh petih zoogeografskih regijah Slovenije. Najpogostejša in najbolj razširjena vrsta v Sloveniji je bil gozdni govnač Anoplotrupes stercorosus (RAA = 0,03 - 13,9 osebka / 10 lovnih noči), najbolj lokalno omejen pa gorski govnač Trypocopris alpinus. Smaragdni Trypocopris vernalis in črni govnač Zuniuoeus hoppei dosegata večje RAA v primorski zoogeografski regiji, v notranjosti Slovenije pa sta redki. Sezonska populacijska dinamika vpliva na velikost RAA v različnih mesecih, vendar se relativne primerjave abundanc med lokacijami med različnimi meseci ohranjajo. Nasprotno so medletna populacijska nihanja pri govnačih majhna in ne vplivajo značilno na velikost RAA, če se habitat in vegetacijska struktura okolja ne spreminjata. Avtorji predlagajo, da bi bilo glede na to vredno v nadaljnjih raziskavah oceniti indikatorske oziroma kazalniške lastnosti govnačev za ugotavljanje učinkov okoljskih sprememb.
