Abstrakt | Quality in health care is a right of patients and at the same time an obligation of health care providers. The most frequent question dealing with quality in health care is, which factors have the largest impact on the improvement of health in the population. A little is known about factors that improve the process and the outcomes of care in patients with arterial hypertension. The aim of the present research was to recognize the impact of individual elements of the process of care in patients with arterial hypertension in general practices, and the impact of the patient's factors on blood pressure control. The goals of this work were: to assess the current state of quality of care in patients with arterial hypertension in Slovenia, to recognize the factors influencing the accordance of the process of care in hypertensive patients with the guidelines, to investigate the impact of the accordance of the process of care with the guidelines on the blood pressure control and on the systolic blood pressure, and to build a methodology for assessment of quality of care in patients with arterial hypertension in general practices in Slovenia. I used a questionnaire, filled out by general practitioners for every patient with diagnosis of arterial hypertension out of 300 consecutive visitors in their office. The questionnaire included data about the patients and their concomitant diseases, about the process of care in arterial hypertension and about the blood pressure levels. I have also collected data about the patients' compliance to the therapy, data about participating physicians, their surgeries and about the organization of work in them. 42 out of 50 invited general practitioners were willing to participate and they collected the data about 2752 patients with arterial hypertension. 9.3% of the patients were managed in accordance with the National guidelines for hypertension from 1999.
