Abstrakt     Aim. To present our experience in reconstructive procedures for breast cancer treatment. Method. Between 1999 and 2004 at the Maribor Teaching Hospital Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, reconstruction of one or both breasts was performed in 46 female patients, thus 50 breasts were reconstructed in all. The patients' age was between 32 and 59 years, their average age 44.9 years. Results. In 18 patients primary reconstruction was performed, in 27 patients secondary, and in 1 patient secondary reconstruction was done on one side and primary on the other. Autologous tissue was used for reconstruction in 27 patients. In 23 reconstructions breast implants were used. In four of these cases the implant was inserted immediately during the first procedure, fifteen times a tissue expander was applied prior to the definitive implantation and in three cases a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap and breast implant was used. On average the duration of the operative procedure for autologous reconstruction was 307 minutes; in reconstruction with implants, however, the total required procedures took an average 248 minutes. The patients were hospitalized for 13 days on average, 5 days minimum and 42 days maximum. No patient died due to complications, two autologous tissue flaps were lost. On account of inflammation it was necessary to remove three implants and one expander. In microsurgical reconstruction, revision was required in five cases; all were successful. In one case there was fibrosing of 1/3 of the free flap. Conclusions. Breast reconstruction greatly increases the quality of life for the women treated for breast cancer.
