Abstrakt     Anemia is a common side effect in cancer therapy, which influences patient's functional capacity and quality of life. It affects almost every body organ, lethargy is one of the most limiting symptom for the patient. In some cancer types anemia also affects patient's survival. Anemia in cancer patients is caused either by disease itself or its treatment. Incidence of anemia depends on cancer type and cancer stage. The aim of our research was to find out, how has cancer-related anemia treatment changed. We investigated wheter recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) treatment improved mean hemoglobin concentration and wheter internal guidelines for rHuEPO treatment were followed. Patients, enrolled in our study, were treated for small cell lung cancer in Bolnišnica Golnik - KOPA (Clinical department for allergy and pulmonary diseases) in years 2000, 2003 and 2005. We have documented: treatment (chemotherapy regimen, treatment with rHuEPO), radiotherapy, clinical data (hemoglobin concentration, serum ferrum concentration), transfusion requirements. We found no statistical differences between patients from different years regarding average age and number of completed chemotherapy cycles, but we found statistical difference regarding sex (p=0,006); number of women increases. Patients receiving radiotherapy had higher mean hemoglobin concentration than those receiving none, regardless of concomitant transfusion and/or rHuEPO treatment. Influence of chemotherapy regimen on mean hemoglobin concentration was not proven. In year 2005 mean hemoglobin concentration has risen, transfusion requirement number has fallen and mean hemoglobin concentration, with which transfusion was given, has risen, too.
