Abstrakt | Background. Acguired ABH antigens occur in a human bodies because of different diseases and, rarely, also spontaneously. Such ABH antigens are not hereditary; they are mutations of stem cells or originally normal antigens after some chemical changes. Methods and results. Acquired B phenomenon (ABacq) in an A1 blood group patient with gram-negative infection that persisted for 20 days is described. The serological procedures that enabled us to distinguish between the A(B) phenomenon and ABw phenotype with anti-B antibodies in the serum and to supply the patient with the compatible blood transfusion promptly are presented. Conclusions. The dangers of a misstyped blood group in similar cases and possible clinical consequences are discussed. The choise of blood group A packed red blood cells for urgent nansfusion in such cases is advised. | |
