Abstrakt     Paediatricians usually have the initial contact with children at the primary level. Thus, with a knowledge of risk factors they are in a position to detect disturbances in child development as early as possible. The two major disorders in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry are hyperkinetic and conduct disorders, both of which have their onset in early childhood and are genetically determined. Impulsivity is the core symptom of both disorders. Impulsivity is the characteristic temperament of both disorders and is the consequence of damage to the frontal region of the CNS. Children with this condition have disturbed inhibitory mechanisms, with consequent disturbances in the control of behaviour, feelings, responses and reflection. Hyperkinetic disorders are one of the commonest disorders in childhood. The spectrum of hyperkinetic disorders comprises three main categories-attention deficit disorder, hyperkinetic impulsive disorder and a combined type. In addition to impulsivity, the main features of the disorders are: poor concentration, motor overactivity, noisiness, forgetfulness, poor working memory, learning difficulties, instability, inflexibility, defiance and sleep problems. Hyperkinetic disorders per se are the main risk factor in the development of conduct disorders. , the others being low IQ, and social and environmental factors, such as child neglect, parental conflict, antisocial behaviour in parents, low socio - economic status and peer and school influences. Hyperkinetic and conduct disorders are often associated with other psychiatric disorders, in particular depressive disorders and threatened suicide. Both types of disorders fall into the category of therapeutically demanding disorders, so preventative action is very important.
