Abstrakt     Chronic cough in children is sometimes linked with hyperresponsiveness of the lower and upper airways. The former is most often associated with asthmatic airway inflammation and the latter with an attenuated mucosal irritant reflex. Lung function tests, in particular spirometry with both inspiratory and expiratory flow-volume loop recording, are of assistance in the differentiation of both forms of hyperresponsiveness. If these investigations are supplemented with the measurement of nitric oxide in exhaled air and with a bronchodilator or a bronchial provocation test, a definite diagnosis of obstructive ventilatory impairment can be made.
