Abstrakt		The goal of this research was to assess the nutritional status of Maribor primary schoolchildren and to establish whether the prevalence of overweight and obese children is on the increase in our population. The authors analysed data on the measurements of height, body mass and body mass index (BMI) by age and sex, obtained at the regular systematic examinations of 5359 primary schoolchildren in the school year 1999/2000 and of 5137 primary schoolchildren in the year 2004/2005. In the five-year period there has been a significant increase in the average BMI in both sexes in the older age groups of Maribor primary schoolchildren (adolescents) and a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obese adolescents of both sexes. On the basis of the research results the authors point out that that there is an urgent need for holistic professionally led health activities, which are adapted to suit young people. At the same time, the research points out the lack of representative, current developmental-anthropological measurements.
