Abstrakt | More then 40 years ago professionals started incorporating principles of behavioural theory and therapy into the management of obesity. Over the years behavioural treatments have become longer and more intensive, often combined with different diets. The main goals of behavioural treatment are changes in eating behaviour and an increase in physical activity. Research has proven the efficacy of behavioural therapy in the treatment of obesity; hence behavioural treatments have become the principal means of managing mild to moderate obesity. However the problem of an inexorable pattern of relapse remains, with five-year follow-ups showing that almost everyone returns to their baseline weight. Therefore researchers have focused on an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms that cause or maintain obesity, resulting in the addition of some cognitive procedures and maintenance strategies to the behavioural treatments. The new cognitive-behavioural treatment of obesity has been developed in recent years. Cognitive-behavioural treatment is effective in reducing binge eating and other maladaptive behaviour associated with obesity, it can improve nutrition and increase physical activity and reliably results in weight loss. The long-term effects seem to be promising. Obesity is a complex and chronic disease. The process of obesity management demands a wide spectrum of programmes, ranging from different preventive and educative activities to diverse motivational and therapeutic treatments. | |
