Abstrakt     Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCD) are an enormous health burden in Slovenia, as in other European countries. The risk of developing NCD begins with genetic predisposition then continues and increases throughout a person's life. The development of NCD is influenced by social and individual risk factors, among which an unhealthy lifestyle predominates. Interventions for controlling risk factors and prevention of early morbidity and premature mortality of NCD have to be undertaken before pregnancy planning and continued with systematic care to ensure the healthy development of children and adolescents. Early detection of those children and adolescents, who are at risk for NCD, and appropriate intervention, is very important. It is necessary to use an integrated approach to the control of NCD, which means the simultaneous action against all risk factors, a combination of individual and population approaches that include all lay and professional environments in which children and adolescents live, learn and receive their health care. CINDI (Countrywide Integrated Noncommunicable Disease Intervention) Slovenia is an organized programme, which, on the basis of the Contract between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health of Slovenia, develops and implements strategies and programmes for the prevention of NCD according to the concepts and recommendations of WHO developed through more than 20 years' experience in the network of 32 CINDI countries. The outcome of fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Health of Slovenia, CINDI Slovenia and experts in the relevant clinical fields is the successful development and implementation of the National programme for the primary prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases, which is operating for the fourth year in the field of primary health care.
