Abstrakt     This contribution describes obesity in children as an illness, starting in early childhood, and resulting in numerous chronic diseases in adulthood. Risk factors for the development of obesity are the level of maternal education, a positive family history, lack of physical activity, bad nutritional habits, an inappropriate lifestyle: watching TV, playing computer games, too little outdoor activities. Overweight is defined as a body mass index between 85th and 95th percentile for age and gender and obesity as a body mass index on or above the 95th percentile for age and gender. Results of the analysed weight and height data for 1685 Maribor children, aged 6, 6.5 and 7 years are presented. It is obvious that there are 150 (8.9%) overweight children and 86 (5.1%) obese children, i.e. altogether 236 (14.0%) children require treatment. Options for treatment and prevention of obesity are described, with an emphasis on a team approach to treatment and family guidance throughout treatment and later during maintenance of weight loss. There is an urgent need to establish paediatric clinics and centres directed at continuous treatment of obesity in children and adolescents at the primary health care level. If a child is found to be overweight at the preschool or school preventative screening examination he/she is referred to the Committee for Overweight and Obese Children. After carrying out diagnostic tests, arrangements are made with the child's parents for the treatment programme and their cooperation is obtained. The child receives a diary, in which he/she/ records everyday activities and food intake. After outpatient treatment a child is sent to the treatment group for a seven-day inpatient treatment programme among peers. For this purpose Miloš Zidanšek's Home, which is situated at a height of 1030 m in the Pohorje, is suggested. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
