Abstrakt     In the educational process of student nurses and midwives, mentors hold the central role in the teaching of practical skills and in the transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice. The organization and management of mentorship in the education process is of utmost importance. If we want mentorship to be effective, nurses and midwives who carry it out should go through a special preparation process. A cross-sectional study was carried out which included 218 candidates for mentorship, students of nursing and midwifery. The results revealed that professional education level of 68.3% of the inguired was suitable at the moment of the study. The percentage of those with less than 5 years of work practice was 9.2%. More than half (65%) have already participated in the mentorship process. An important percentage of those without suitable educational level probably reflects the actual scarcity of nurses and midwives with high level education in Slovenia. Experience with mentorship and length of practice can significantly alleviate heavy transition from the role of a nurse to a role of a mentor. On the basis of the achieved results the authors came to important conclusions which could be taken into account in the future education of mentors and the indispensable close cooperation among the two eduational environments: the pratice of nursing care and the educational institution.
Izvleček     Mentorji imajo bistveno vlogo pri pridobivanju in utrjevanju praktičnih veščin ter povezovanju teorije s prakso pri študentih zdravstvene nege in babištva. Pomembno je, kako je mentorstvo v izobraževalnem procesu organizirano in vodeno. Da bi medicinske sestre in babice v vlogi mentoric prakse mentorstvo najučinkoviteje opravljale, jih je potrebno na to vlogo posebej pripraviti. Izvedena je bila presečna študija na vzorcu 278 anketiranih možnih mentorjih, študentom zdravstvene nege in babištva. Rezultati so pokazali, da ima 68,3% vprašanih v opazovanem trenutku ustrezno strokovno izobrazbo. Delež z manj kot pet let delovnih izkušenj je 9,2%. Dobra polovica (65%) se je z mentorstvom že srečala. Razmeroma velik delež tistih, ki nimajo izpolnjenega kriterija izobrazbe, je verjetno odraz trenutnega pomanjkanja diplomiranih medicinskih sester in diplomiranih babic v Sloveniji. Dotedanje mentorske izkužnje in število let delovne dobe lahko bistveno pripomorejo v premagovanju težavnega prehoda iz vloge medicinske sestre oziroma babice v vlogo mentorice. Na osnovi dobljenih rezultatov sta avtorici prišli do pomembnih zaključkov, ki jih bo mogoče upoštevati pri prihodnjem izobraževanju mentorjev in nujnem tesnem sodelovanju med dvema učnima okoljema: prakso zdravstvene nege in izobraževalno institucijo.
