Abstrakt     POINT OF DEPARTURE. Malaria, a disease caused by blood parasites of genus Plasmodium, represents a world-wide health problem. It is a disease that kills most people throughout the world, taking a toll of more than 5 million lives every year. It is not only the local population that is exposed to infection, but also travellers to tropical and subtropical areas. Medical students and young physiciarvs have been taking part in a practical work lasting several months and focusing on hurnatutarian and educational purposes in these areas within the optional subject of tropical medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana for the past 15 years. They try to reduce the risk of contracting malaria by means of chemoprophylaxis and expositional prophylaxis. Although more than 200 students have taken part in these expeditions so far, the data on the incidence of malaria in their ranks have not yet been gathered and processed. SCOPE. In many a developed country, the incidence of malaria in travellers is under more accurate epidemiological scrutiny than in Slovenia. Its aim is to ascertain the incidence trends, monitor the protection quality of travellers, perceive resistance to antimalarics, and take effective action as necessary. We would like to achieve the latter for Slovene travellers, particularly for participants in our humanitarian expeditions to the tropics, as well. With this purpose in mind, we decided to statistically process the incidence of malaria in this group that represents a unique sample far analysis due to its homogeneity and medical knowledge and to determine eventual factors influencing such incidence.
