Abstrakt     A prospective review of patients with penetrating abdominal vena cava (AVC) injuries treated by vascular surgeon in major trauma center (Teaching Hospital Maribor between January 1990 and December 2004) is presented. Twenty-one patients with AVC injuries were followed up (18 men, average 33.2 years, and range 17- SR years). There were three low velocity gunshot wounds, four stab wounds, the rest were patients from different accidents. The mean wcighied revised trauma score, injury severity score (LSS) and penetrating abdominal trauma index (PATI) were 5.8, 26 atnd 28 respectively. The AVC injury was infrarenal and suprarenal in 17 and 4 patients respectively. All injuries were reconstructed with PTFE patch or tube graft. There was no ligation of the AVC. Thare were five deaths in early postoperative period (within 30 days after injury) due to multiorgan system failure (23.8%). In survivors there were no late complications of caval repair. Reconstruction of the AVC in critically injured patients with artificial prosthetic material is a feasible and live-saving option.
