Abstrakt     Background. Success of artificial reproductive techniques gave rise to the incidence of multiple pregnancies at Department of perinatology of Maribor teaching hospital to 2,65%. With comparing the data from 1979 and 1990-1991 to 2000-2003 we wanted to evaluate the current management of multiple pregnancies and deliveries at our department. We were especially interested in analysing our advances in preventing preterm labour and delivery. Methods. We retrospectively analysed the data from 1979, 1990-1991 and 2000-2003. We analysed management and deliveries of all multiple pregnancies during mentioned years. We calculated stillbirth rate and neonatal mortality for multiple pregnancies between 2000 and 2003 at the Department for perinatology of Maribor Teaching Hospital. Results. The incidence of multiple pregnancies rose from 1,2% in 1979 to 2,65% in 2000-2003. Early diagosis of multiple pregnancy is 100%. Use of tocolysis was reduced by 30%. Use of cerclage has fallen to 1,4%. Hospitalisation of pregnant women with multiple pregnancies has fallen from 96% in 1979 to 33% in 2000-2003. The incidence of cesarean deliveries rose from 2,3% in 1979 to 60% in years 2000-2003. Deliveries before 34 weeks were noted in 63,9% of twin pregnancies in 1979, in 23,1% in 1990-1991 and in 20,9% in 2000-2003. Perinatal mortality of babies delivered after 28 weeks of gestation in years 2000-2003 was 11,8 [per thousand]. Conclusions. With early diagnosis of multiple pregnancies and proper management that is based on evidence based medicine we were able to reduce perinatal mortality in multiple pregnancies.
