Abstrakt     Background. Primary osteoarthritis of the hip is a very common disease, for its prevalence after age 55 is 19% while its development often requires implantation of hip endoprosthesis. In spite of high prevalence the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. On the ground of clinical observations a hypothesis has been put forward stating that the loading of the hip is important for the onset and development of the hip osteoarthritis. To our knowledge, there is no direct evidence on direct measurements of elevated biomechanical parameters describing hip loading in the population of hips diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis with respect to the population of healthy hips. Recent studies based on the method HIPSTRESS indicate that the peak hip joint contact stress normalized to the body weight importantly influences the development of secondary osteoarthritis of the hip in some diseases (developmental hip dysplasia, femoral head osteonecrosis). Therefore we were interested whether by using the same method we could find elevated hip joint loading also in hips diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis with respect to healthy hips. Aim. Aim of the study is to determine the role of the radial contact hip stress (pmax/Wb) in development of primary osteoarthritis of the hip. We would also like to study the influence of different geometrical parameters of the hip and pelvis in development of the primary osteoarthritis of the hip. Hypotheses. The values of the peak contact hip stress pmax/Wb are on the average higher in the population of hips diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis than in the populatio of healthy hips. The value of pmax/Wb influences the rate of development of osteoarthritis of the hip. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
