Abstrakt | Background: Eating disorders are a health issue of great concern in industrialized societies but are still, unfortunately, usually diagnosed only when they become clinically manifest. Early recognition of risk factors and specific diagnostic approach could help us detect eating disorders in susceptible individuals at a time, when professional help is still most effective. Aim: The aim of this study was to gain insight in the frequency of eating-disordered behaviors, further to detect risk factors and to search for correlations between eating-disordered behaviors and typical cognitive relation to food and one's own body in a community sample of Slovenian adolescents. Hypotheses: We predicted that, overall, Slovenian adolescents do not show eating-disordered behaviors, have positive self-esteem and low level of depression. We expected differences in relation to age and gender. We further anticipated correlations between eating-disordered behaviors, level of self-esteem and depression. Methods: 354 primary school pupils (mean age 13 years) and 428 high school students (mean age 17 years), both boys and girls, equally distributed among slovene geographical regions, took part in our study. Three separate questionnaires were applied: Questionnaire for the assessment of self-esteem (SPA), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and Eating Disorder Examination- Questionnaire 4 (EDE-Q4). The data we gathered were statistically analyzed by employing the following statistical methods: determination of frequency and descriptive statistical parameters, t-test, analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis test and Pearson correlation eoefficient. Results: The majority of Slovenian adolescents show positive self-esteem. Boys in high school have higher self-esteem compared to girls of the same age. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters) | |
