Abstrakt     The Slovene population is, as well as the developed world, getting older. Consequently, social and economic relations are changing too. With this process, a need for health security is also arising. In old age, the number of chronic diseases which worsen the functional cpacity of an organismand often leave permanent consequences grows. With a decrease of mental and physical abilities the dependence on environment increases, the quality of life, however, decreases. Physical limitations are most frequently a result of degeneration osteo-articular diseases that can be found with the majority of elderly persons. The quality of ageing is decresing also because of sight and hearing disturbances as well as mentol changes. The recognizing of diseases in the elderly is many times very difficult, since these diseases appear in their unusual form; besides, the most distinctive signs of an acute disease may not show atall. That is why it is necessary to take prompt action and to establish the actual cause of a diseasewith diagnostic procedures with every sudden change of the behaviour of an elderly person. Further, one of the typical features of geriatric medicine is also the fact that in old age chronic diseases areon the increase and they are a source of frequent acute complications requiring hospitalization. iceatment of diseases of the elderly is diffic:ult for such patients. Due to their weakened functional ability of vital organs and accompanying diseases the possibilities invasive treatment are very limited. from the point of view of emergency medicine it is important to make quick decisions and to provide a patient with fast and safe transport to the health centre, when his behaviour changes unexpectedly or when acute symptoms of recognizable disease arise.
