Abstrakt | Background. Peri-intraventricular hemorrhage (P/IVH) is a disease of the smallest premature infants. Regardless of rapid progress in the P/IVH treatment, the disease still affects more than 30% of very low birth weight infants. Severe forms of P/IVH are involved in neonatal mortality and morbidity, and remain an important cause of cerebral palsy and developmental disability of premature infants. Most hemorrhages occur within the first three days, as many as 50% during the first 12 hours after birth. Perinatal and neonatal factors that influence the cerebral blood flow might directly affect immature vessels of the germinal matrix and initiate P/IVH. The occurrence of P/IVH is associated with a history of maternal chorioamnionitis and ventilatory treatment of respiratory distress syndrome. It is believed that cytokines mediate the link between chorioamnionitis and P/IVH in addition to ventilator induced lung injury and P/IVH. Aims. The aim of the study was to examine the association between placental and/or fetal inflammation and the onset of P/IVH in premature infants, and to delineate the role of cytokines.
