Abstrakt     Depression is a mood disorder which also includes changes in one's appearance, behaviour and cognition. The burden of depression is felt in terms of impaired quality of life for individuals and lost productivity for society. Depression is more frequent among individuals with existing physical illness compared to physically healthy individuals. The treatment gap (the proportion of those who need treatment, but are not treated) for depression is more than evident and is mainly a consequence of the attached stigma and sparse knowledge about the disease. Almost half of those with depressive disorder will not seek help within the health-care system. Of those who do seek help and consult their primary care physicians, only a third will be adequately treated. The challenge is clear: the recognition and treatment of depression has to be improved by educating professionals and other members of the community who are contacted by individuals with depressive disorder and can encourage them to seek help, as well as by raising awareness among persons with depression and their closest relatives and friends that depression is a disorder as any other.
