Abstrakt     BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that leads to the destruction of l3-cells in the pancreas. The rate of the l3-cell destruction varies, being faster in children and adolescents and slower in adult patients, The incidence of T1 D shows great geographic variability. Epidemiologic studies have shown that the incidence of T1D increases with distance from the equator in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. The lowest incidence is found in Asia, the Caribbean Islands and Latin America and the highest in the Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, Canada and Sardinia. T1D is a rare disease in children bellow the age of 1 year, after which the incidence rapidly increases until the age of 15 years than decreases again. T1D is a multifactorial disease, with both genetic and environmental factors playing an important role. Studies of the genetic background show strong correlation with the HLA class II antigens, especially with the HLA-DQA and -DQB loci. Breast-feeding, vaccination, viral infections and stress are among factors discused as environmental influences. AIM OF THE STUDY: We analysed the epidemiological data for T1D in Slovenia and calculated the incidence, trends in incidence and seasonality of births in newly diagnosed cases of T1D between 1974 and 1998. The genetic background of T1D was studied in a selected population of children and adolescents. Finally we analysed the possible correlation between islet cell antibodies (ICA), insulin autoantibodies (IAA) and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) autoantibodies (Aab) and HLA-DRB-DQB haplotypes.
