Abstrakt     Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar non-ketotic hyperglycaemic state are lifethreatening emergencies manifested by marked elevation of blood glucose. Cardinal biochemical features of diabetic ketoacidosis, besides hyperglycaemia, are metabolic acidosis and hyperketonaemia and of hyperosmolar non-ketotic hyperglycaemic state hyperosmolarity with little or no ketosis. Although the precipitating causes are numerous, underlying infection is the most common. Intravenous insulin and fluid replacement are the mainstays of therapy, with careful monitoring of the patient and laboratory values. Identification and treatment of the underlying and precipitating causes are necessary. Finally, physicians should focus on preventing future episodes using patient education and instruction in self-monitoring.
