Abstrakt     Acute liver failure is a rare disease. The syndrome is defined by the sudden onset of hepatic encephalopathy in an otherwise healthy individual, often in association with coagulopathy, jaundice and multisystem organ failure. The precise incidence is not known. The most prominent causes are viral hepatitis and drug-induced liver injury. Etiology of acute liver failure provides one of the best indicators of prognosis and also dictates specific management options. Prior to transplantation the survival rate was less than 15%. Liver transplantation for acute liver failure is an effective treatment which offers an overall survival of about 65%. A variety of selection criteria are in use worldwide to identify patients for emergency transplantation. In Slovenia the King's College criteria are used.
