Abstrakt		Drowning is a significant cause of mortality in the world. According to the new definition drowning is a process resulting in primary respiratory impairment from submersion in a liquid medium. The main pathophysiological feature in drowning is hypoxia. Immediate and aggressive resuscitation is the single most important factor influencing survival. The key to successful reduction of submersion accidents and its tragic outcomes is prevention. The article reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment of drowning. Management of drowning victims in the internal department of General hospital Izola is briefly presented.
