Abstrakt     Successful driving depends on the driver's skill and ability, which is limited by his/her sensoric, motoric and cognitive functions. An analysis of traffic accidents in Slovenia in the period from 1998 to 2000 was performed, with the emphasis on the causes, the consequences and the age structure of people involved in these accidents. Drivers over 65 have caused 11.5% of all traffic accidents (the most common cause of the accidents was failure to yield right of way) and were involved (but did not cause) in 10.7% of the accidents. The outcomes of traffic accidents that involved elderly people were much more severe than the outcomes of other accidents. The number of fatalities in the age group over 75 was seven times the average of all age groups for drivers and nine times for passengers. The percentage of traffic accidents caused by the elderly is not very high, however, the number also reflects that the elderly do not participate in traffic as much as the younger population. Outcomes of traffic accidents involving the elderly are usually very serious. All this indicates that their capacity (despite their experience) to be a part of today's traffic steadily decreases - sometimes even to a point when they represent a threat to traffic safety.
