Abstrakt     Self-help groups of the elderly have been present in the world for many years - the first self-help group in Slovenia was founded as early as in 1987 (1). According to foreign literature, self help groups of relatives of patients with dementia started to emerge in different forms after the year 1970 (2); in Slovenia, the first meeting of a self-help group of relatives of patients with dementia was in March 2003. It was formed upon the initiative and the wish of people who found themselves in a grave predicament because of the illness of their family member. The illness of a family member, lack of information and their feelings of being misunderstood and unaccepted quite often forced them into social isolation. Members of a self help group of relatives of patients with dementia expect help and understanding from the other members, and at the same time they are willing to share their knowledge, experience, and understanding in order to help the others. Above all, participants are able to share their distress and their feelings with people, who understand them due to their own predicaments.
