Abstrakt     Background: Technological advancement in ultrasound equipment has led to consideration of this imaging procedure as an important and accurate tool for morphological assessment of the bowel wall in inflammatory bowel diseases. The decision for the other imaging modalities and diagnostic procedures that are more invasive (ileocolonoscopy with histological biopsy) or include radiation (barium x-ray series, CT) is based on the ultrasound examination results. Methods: The sonographic appearance of the inflammatory-changed bowel were evaluated in nine children that were hospitalized in the Department of Pediatric. Results: All children with Crohn's disease had at liest one abnormal bowel segment with non-stratified, thckened, hipoechoic and hiperemic bowel wall. The lumen was narrowed and the wall was straight. Enlarged lymph nodes and hiperechoic fat were seen in the mesentery of the affected bowel. Compared with Crohn's disease, the bowel wall thickening of the affected large bowel is less pronounced in ulcerative colitis. The stratification is mostly preserved. Changes found on the ultrasound were compared with those found on the barium x-ray studies and ileocoloscopy with histologic examination. Conclusion: Our results of ultrasonography in inflammatory bowel disease was in concordance with other similar studies.
