Abstrakt     Among different diagnostic methods in gastroenterology, percutaneus ultrasound is the most frequently used imaging method in detecting different liver diseases, including benign and malignant tumors and focal liver lesions. The results of ultrasound investigation guide diagnostic procedures and treatment. Although many advantages of this diagnostic method, the main disadvantages of are low sensivity and specificity in discrimination of focal liver lesions. Benign liver tumors are the commonest among primary hepatic neoplasm, they are often found in patients without any clinical complaints. Among benign tumors hemangioma is the most common, followed by focal nodular hyperplasia and adenoma. In this article the author describes the most significant sonographic characteristics of these lesions and the efficacy of complementary imaging methods. In diagnostic procedure characterisation of these lesions is based on results of different imaging methods: computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and scintigraphic techniques, morphological characteristics of tumors and laboratory tests, including activity of tumor markers. In the last period, among functional-imaging methods positron emission tomography (PET) is a/so used. For definitive diagnosis of these lesions, liver biopsy is only rarely necessary.
