Abstrakt     The future parents expect an ideal pregnancy and an ideal child to be born and usually this is the case. During labour and delivery they want a midwife they know. In Slovenia the continuity of care in pregnancy and after delivery, led by midwives, is not yet in place. For a minority of pregnant women the perinatal care is too medicalised and they refuse it. Screening tests are used in pregnancy to discover abnormalities; it should be kept in mind that a screening test can have false positive and false negative results. The result of a diagnostic test may reveal something totally unexpected. Chronic diseases may complicate pregnancy and the prediction of outcome is impossible. The extremely preterm delivery which contributes the largest part to perinatal mortality and morbidity can not be predicted either. The future parents in Slovenia are well informed. In pregnancy they adapt to the changing situation. To make difficult times easier for them they need a lot of understanding and explanations; they should also be told that the answers to all questions are not available.
