Abstrakt     Patient involvement means giving a patient the possibility of playing an active role in making decisions concerning his own health care. Old people represent a growing share of population, yet very little is known about their specific needs, problems and expectations in the treatment process. The objective of the paper was to assess the present involvement of old people in the treatment in the field of family medicine and to create tools and recommendations for initiating the involvement of old people. I wanted to test new tools in practice and to evaluate their efficiency. I performed an intervention project that lasted three years. The first phase comprised interviews with patients aged over 70 and with their practitioners. The gathered materials were analysed by qualitative methodology. In the second phase I used the results obtained by the qualitative analysis and found in the literature and created four new tools for initiating involvement: an open question sheet, a reminder sheet, my health diary and a motivation poster. The third phase started with an intervention that comprised the training of practitioners and the use of new tools in a group of patients aged over 70. The effects of the intervention were evaluated by written questionnaires filled in by the patients before and after the intervention. The questionnaires were analysed by quantitative methodology. The results of the first phase show that specific characteristics of the senior period have to be taken into account in the involvement of old patients. It is important to know the patient's expectations, to have good communication with the patient and there should exist a good relationship between the practitioner and the patient.
