Abstrakt		Predation is a serious threat to colonial waierbirds, especially in managed colonies for conservation of threatened species. While the effectiveness of a simple antipredator measure, the placing of chick shelters, has been tested against gulls, there are few studies on their effectiveness abainst raptor predation. The quantified protective effect of chick shelters abainst raptor predation in a mixed Common Tern and Black-headed Gull colony is now reported. Three identical artificial breeding rafts were equipped with different numbers of chick shelters. All chicks were observed to be subject to predaiion by Goshawk Accipiter gentilis, with an intensity independent of the presence or number of chick shelters, indicating that they offered uo protective function. 1VIore sophisticated protective measures are thus needed to control raptor predation in a managed colony.
