Abstrakt     BACKGROUND. The prevalence of heart failure increases with ageing mainly because of diastolic dysfunction. Therefore the evaluation of diastolic dysfunction in the elderly is very important. Classic echocardiographic methods are often not accurate enough. Tissue Doppler echocardiography enables precise measurement of myocardial velocities. These velocities represent left and right ventricular function in the case of mural and tricuspid annulus and left ventricular radial function in the case of posterior left ventricular wall. It is known that early diastolic tissue Doppler velocities of mural and tricuspid annulus (E„,, E,) decrease with age as a result of worsening of ventricular diastolic function. The data regarding systolic velocities (Sm, St) are less consistent. It is believed that they also decrease with ageing as a result of longitudinal ventricular systolic dysfunction and that there is a compensatory increase of radial velocities. Normal values of tissue Doppler velocities assessed in a larger group of older people can't be found in the literature. Also it is not known whether these velocities are related to plasma levels of amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and exercise capacity. METHODS. A total of 30 healthy younger (age < 40 years) and 30 healthy older (age > 70 years) individuals were included in the study. Tissue Doppler mitral and tricuspid annular velocities (early diastolic - Em, Et and systolic - Sm, St) at both lateral and septal borders and radial velocities (Er, Sr) at basal segment of posterior ventricular wall were measured in all subjects. All underwent maximal bicycle stress test with direct measurement of oxygen consumption. Plasma levels NT-proBNP were measured. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
