Abstrakt     Background: Very often patients visit general practitioners/family doctors due to acute infection of upper respiratory organs. In such cases prescribing of antibiotics is very often unfounded and not necessary. Purpose: With this research we wanted to imd out which influences and reasons influence the doctor's decision to prescribe an antibiotic in case of an acute infection of the upper respiratory tract. Following the results gained we could propose measures with which prescribing of antibiotics could be lessened. Methods: We made a quantitative data analysis of the cross-sectional survey among Slovenian general practitioners. An analysis of different factors connected with a doctor, patient, outpatient's department and factors connected with a contact with a patient. In order to find out additional factors which influence the prescribing of antibiotics we interviewed ten doctors who took part in the cross-sectional study. The doctors were chosen according to the highest and the lowest part of prescribed antibiotics. With this we wanted to gain the highest possible number of factors which could explain the variability of the prescribed antibiotics. Results: 522 cases were analysed. An antibiotic was prescribed in 62.6% of cases. Prescribing deviated mostly in treatment of the upper nonspecific respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, acute infection of the middle ear and laryngitis. The doctor's age, the use and access to laboratory checks, the time of consultation, durations of control checkups, the location of the outpatients department, the distance from the hospital and having a sistem for making an appointment with a patient typically influenced the prescribing of antibiotics.
