Abstrakt     Theoretical background v;iriety of different theories and explanations of suicidality have emerged throughout the hisioiy and still coexist today, with no single theory of suicide that could explain this phcnumeuon entirely. The incompatibility of the beliefs among experts and (potential) users of medical services can influence help-seeking behaviour and adherence to the treatment. Aims The aims of the study were to identify the expllanations on suicidal behaviour (namely the views on the causes, process, risk factors, recognition, help-seeking behaviour, treatment, prevention and stigmatisation of suicidal behaviour) and to determine possible Incompatibilities between the lay (the general population and suicide attempters) and expert (the general practitioners and psychiatrists) views. Methods In the first phase, the semi-structured interviews were conducted with people from the general population, suicide attempters, general practitioners and psychiatrists. On the basis of the qualitative analysis (thematic coding) of the data generated from the interviews, the Questionnaire on Attitudes towards Suicide was revised. Tn the second hase, the revised version of the questionnaire was applied to the new samples of the lay and expert participants. The factor analysis was than used to determine the underlying structure of the attitudes and the one-way ANOVA to compute the differences between the four groups of participants. ResultsThe research showed that the general population and suicide attempters shared similar explanations on suicidal behaviour, favouring the crisis perspective and stressing the role of the crisis, personality, family and social support. The suicide attempters believed in the medical perspective as well. The stigmatisation of the suicidal behaviour in these two social groups was expressed. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
