Abstrakt     Background. Teachers as voice professionals with everyday heavy vocal load represent population at high risk of vocal problems. A number of studies that have been done abroad and a previous Slovenian study on voice disorders among teachers have shown the large extent of the problem. Objective. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of voice disorders among teachers in Slovenia, to identify some risk factors and underlying causes Methods. In the epidemiological part of the study 1509 questionnaires about voice disorders and vocal habits were completed and sent back by teachers from randomly chosen elementary schools, middle schools and kindergarten in Slovenia. 166 teachers from Ljubljana were included in the second part of the study which consisted of recording their voice samples and evaluating them by two independent professionals. Those who had moderately or severely dysphonic voice sample or who complained of having frequent subjective voice disorders were invited for clinical ENT examination where we identified causes. Data were statistically analyzed by x2 test and logistic regression model. Results. Of the 1509 teachers from the epidemiological part of the study, 87% were females and 13% males, with normal distribution by age and career length. 46% were elementary school teachers, 26% secondary school teachers and 28% kindergarten teachers. For the school year 2002/03 761 (51%) teachers reported occasional and 228 (15%) frequent vocal problems. For the whole career 1065 (71%) teachers reported occasional and 273 (18%) frequent voice problems. The prevalence of voice problems was therefore 66% for the school year 2002/03 and 89% for the whole career. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
