Abstrakt		Medical files of 32 children receiving antiepileptic therapy and having elevated blood ammonia levels were analysed. All except one child were receiving valproate alone or in various combinations. 7 of them, all receiving polytherapy, developed clinical symptoms. Less than half of the patients needed some kind of therapeutic treatment (discontinuation of valproate therapy, low-protein diet). No liver function impairment was found. Due to poor correlation between clinical symptoms and ammonia levels, we strongly recommend regular blood ammonia measurements be performed in patients receiving valproate, especially when taken in combination with other antiepileptic drugs.
