Abstrakt		Newborn hearing screening was accepted world wide as a prerequisite of an early diagnosis of congenital hearing impairment. In a period of six years we evaluated the hearing of 255 infants who failed neonatal hospital-based hearing screening with transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions (TOAE). We used several tests during the diagnostic procedure: measurement of TOAE, tympanometry, behavioural audiometry in sound field and auditory brainstem responses (ABR). The assessments were performed at the age of one to three months. Hearing impairment was confirmed in 36.86% of infants. Conductive hearing loss was treated by conservative therapy and installation of tympanic tubes. In infants with permanent hearing impairment (25.88%) the rehabilitation started with medical devices (hearing aids, cochlear implants). Early identification of hearing impairment results in earlier initiation of intervention services.
