Abstrakt     The incidence of colorectal cancer is still on the increase. This cancer, if detected early, is curable even by surgery alone. The patients with stage I colon cancer and the majority of patients with stage II colon cancer treated by surgery alone usually do not require additional treatments, whereas the patients with stage III disease need to be treated by adjuvant chemotherapy, which reduces disease recurrences, thereby improving total survival and increasing the number of complete remission. Preoperativa radiochemotharapy is new standard for patients with localy advanced rectal carcinoma. In most cases, metastatic colorectal cancer is incurable; however, the prognosis and survival of these patients have significantly improved in the last 6 years. From the mean 10-month survival that we attained by applying 5-fluorouracil, an agent that few years ago was considered to be an effective drug for the treatment of these patients, we achieved higher survival rates, longer than 20 months, by applying new cytotoxic drugs. In the last six years, five new drugs were registered for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. These are three cytostatics (capecitabine, irinotecan, oxaliplatin) and two target drugs (cetuximab and bevacuzimab). Combined treatment assures a better quality of life and longer remissions and thus also total survival. The combination of cytostatic and target drugs improves particularly the mean survival rate, which may be higher than 30 months. These combinations of drugs used in combination with surgical treatment of lung and liver metastases may result in complete remission.
