Abstrakt     Background. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem. The incidence and prevalence of CKD are rising. Also the number of patients with CKD who are treated with dialysis is rising (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis). The estimated prevalence of CKD in the US adult population is 11 %. The patients with CKD are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The risk of cardiovascular disease is raising once the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) drops below 60 ml per minute per 1.73m2 of body surface. This value corresponds to a serum creatinine level between 88 and 150 pmol/1 for people over 40 years old. Several studies showed that CKD is an independent predictor for cardiovascular disease, although some studies have found no significant association between CKD and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular mortality in end stage renal disease patients is 10 to 20 times higher than in general population. The prevalence of ischemic heart disease in general population is 5-12%, it rises with level of kidney damage and it is estimated to be 20-40 % in end stage renal disease patients. There is no data available concerning prevalence of ischemic heart disease in CKD patients. The prevalence of CKD is higher in patients with acute myocardial infarction than in general population and is estimated to be 18-37%. Patients with end stage renal disease after acute myocardial infarction have higher mortality than in general population. Patients with CKD should be considered in the highestrisk group for cardiovascular disease events. The connections between CKD and cardiovascular disease are numerous. The prevalence of risk factors for development of cardiovascular disease in patients with CKD is high. (Abstracts truncated at 2000 characters)
