Abstrakt     Background Transient hypocalcaemia is the most common complication after thyroid surgery. The causes of transient hypocalcaemia are multifactorial. Patients who underwent total thyroidectomy may also suffer from hypomagnesaemia. Normomagnesaemia is needed for normal secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and end-organ responsiveness. Hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia can be resistant to calcium therapy, but symptoms disappear after infusion of magnesium sulphate. Aim Hypomagnesaemia after total thyroidectomy has not been studied extensively, neither its therapy. This study has been designed to evaluate the incidence of transient hypocalcaemia and the length of the hospitalization after intraoprerative application of magnesium sulphate. Our aim is to determine the influence of magnesium sulphate application on the incidence of laboratory and clinical transient hypocalcaemia and on the length of the hospitalization. Another aim was to correlate the presence of transient hypocalcaemia and parathyroid tissue in histopathological sample. Hypotesis The incidence of laboratory and clinical transient hypocalcaemia are lower if the patients during total thyroidectomy received magnesium sulphate. The length of the hospitalization and the number of patients treated for hypocalcaemia during the hospitalization are lower if the patients received magnesium sulphate. The patients with incidental parathyroidectomy have more often transient hypocalcaemia. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
