Abstrakt     The subject of this thesis is the holistic image of bereavement process and functioning of the bereaved on different areas of life after loss of a partner from sudden death (sudden disease, suicide, traffic accident) or expected death (long-term illness) one or two years after the loss of a partner. In the introduction the author presents some terminological and content issues about different aspects of bereavement and also theorethical and empirical conclusions of researchers about grief process. The author assessed the functioning of bereaved on different areas of life with semi-structured interview, specially designed for this research, and with adapted version of Attachment test on STSI (Žvelc, 1998). Because of the sensitive nature of bereavement process the author decided for case study as work method (she interviewed seven subjects) and for circularly designed research process, which enabled her through content analysis to improve research design every time. The author found out that bereaved after sudden loss of their partner have more problems in adapting on different areas of life in comparison with bereaved after the expected loss of partner. After one - two years after loss they have more problems on the following areas: physical and mental state (sleep, concentration, speech) and the ability to work - the loss after traffic accident and as participant in an accident; emotional experience and expression (suicidal thoughts), social network (stigmatization and avoiding of others, involvement of police), family (functioning of the whole family system) - the loss after suicide. Through content analysis the author also found out that the relationship between partners is an important criterion of the bereavement process, therefore she expanded the interpretation of initial hypothesis.
