Abstrakt     A database of drug prescriptions was established and began to be used in the mid seventies. Since 1981 inclusive, all the data from prescriptions issued by Slovene pharmacies to medically-insured persons in Slovenia have been included in the database. All drugs registered in Slovenia are coded according to the Uniform Classification of drugs, which enables the monitoring and presentation of the utilization and consumption of drugs according to pharmacodynamic groups, subgroups and individual drugs. By means of mathematical methods it ispossible to foresee the adequate medicamentous prevention of chronic noninfectious diseases on the basis of epidemiological data for specific regions. By comparing the results obtained in various methods of presenting the utilization and consumption of drugs, we wish to determine the most suitable method of assistance in nssessing the secondaryprevention ofchronic noninfectious diseases. Our intention was to find easier, quicker and more economical method which would simultaneously enable comparison with other countries. These results may serve as a valuable basis for the formulation of a national health policy and the health programmes of insurance companies. Such an approach to the secondnry prevention of chronic noninfectious diseases has opened the relatively undeveloped field of pharmacoepidemiology and social pharmncy in our country.
