Abstrakt		Melatonin is the main secretory product of the pineal gland of all mammals, including humans. Functionally, melatonin has been linked to the strengthening of circadian rhythms, regulation of seasonal reproduction and sleep processes. That melatonin functions as an antioxidant and affects cell proliferation and death was only uncovered in the last decade. The following article describes known facts about the role of melatonin as an antioxidant and its influence on cell proliferation and apoptosis. All these activities of melatonin indicate that it may be useful in the treatment of various conditions.
Izvleček		Melatonin je pri sesalcih znan kot glavni sekretorni produkt češerike. Njegova fiziološka funkcija je, da okrepi cirkadiani ritem in vpliva na sezonski reprodukcijski cikel, povezan pa je tudi s spanjem. V zadnjem desetletju so odkrili, da melatonin deluje kot antioksidant in da vpliva tudi na celično delitev in smrt. V članku so opisana spoznanja o vlogi melatonina kot antioksidanta pri vnetju in dejstva o vplivih melatonina na apoptozo in proliferacijo celic. Vsi predstavljeni učinki nakazujejo možnost uporabe melatonina pri zdravljenju različnih bolezni.
