Abstrakt		The severity of the problems concerning the vertebral column occupational disease is not known in the Republic of Slovenia, since there is no computer-assisted register of the suspected occupational disease, occupational diseases and work-related diseases. In 2001, musculoskeletal disorders (35%), particularly vertebral column disease and the occupational overloading syndrome, occupied the first position among the diagnosed occupational diseases in EU-12. The musculoskeletal disorders of the vertebral column are acute and chronic and develop for several reasons. Their origin and development are influenced by physical and psychosocial factors of the work and life environment, age and genetic factors. When trying to prevent the vertebral column occupational disease, the ergonomic organization of workplace is important, which can be achieved by reducing the damaging effect of the physical and psychosocial factors of the work environment. Criteria for the verification of chronic vertebral column diseases as an occupational disease are presented.
